Επιμνημόσυνη δέηση στη μνήμη του Επιλοχία και Σωματάρχη Γεώργιου Λάιου τελέστηκε το απόγευμα της Δευτέρας παρουσία επισήμων, εκπροσώπων των τοπικών αρχών και κατοίκων της περιοχής.

 

Ο Λάιος έπεσε ηρωικά μαχόμενος στις 21 Μαρτίου του 1878, στη μάχη της Ματαράγκας και Πετρομαγούλας Κιερίου για την απελευθέρωση της Θεσσαλίας απ’ τον τουρκικό ζυγό.

Η επιμνημόσυνη δέηση, τελέστηκε στο πλαίσιο του εορτασμού της επετείου της τελευταίας μάχης της Θεσσαλικής Επανάστασης του 1878 (καθιερώθηκε με Π.Δ η 21η Μαρτίου) στον τάφο του Γεώργιου Λάιου, στον λόφο Πετρομαγούλας Πύργου Κιερίου, χοροστατούντος του Αιδεσιμολογιωτατου π. Ηλία Γώγου. 

Ο τάφος του συμβολίζει τον αγώνα των μαχητών της περιώνυμης Μάχης Ματαράγκας και Πετρομαγούλας Κιερίου, καθώς και τη θυσία των 36 αγωνιστών έναντι 800 των Τούρκων μέσα σε μια ημέρα.

 

Ακολούθησε ομιλία για τα γεγονότα της εποχής από τον συγγραφέα και φιλόλογο Βαγγέλη Ντελή και κατάθεση στεφάνων από το Δήμαρχο Σοφάδων κ. Θάνο Σκάρλο, τον εντεταλμένο Σύμβουλο της Περιφέρειας Θεσσαλίας κ. Ορέστη Ψαχούλα, τον πρόεδρο της ΤΚ Πύργου Κιερίου Μπερνάρας Γιώργος και την εκπρόσωπο της κοινότητας Ποτιδάνειας Δωρίδος τόπο καταγωγής του Γεώργιου Λάιου.
