Οι άνθρωποι της μέσης και της τρίτης ηλικίας που υποκειμενικά νιώθουν φτωχοί (άσχετα με το πόσο είναι πραγματικά φτωχοί), αρρωσταίνουν πολύ πιο εύκολα και γενικά έχουν χειρότερη υγεία, καθώς και μικρότερο προσδόκιμο ζωής, σύμφωνα με μια νέα γερμανική έρευνα. Ήταν ήδη γνωστό ότι η αντικειμενική φτώχεια σχετίζεται με χειρότερη υγεία και με πιο σύντομη ζωή, όμως η νέα μελέτη δείχνει ότι ακόμα και η υποκειμενική φτώχεια (δηλαδή πώς αξιολογεί κανείς την προσωπική κοινωνικο-οικονομική κατάστασή του) έχει ανάλογες επιπτώσεις.

Οι ερευνητές του Κέντρου Κοινωνικών Ερευνών του Βερολίνου, με επικεφαλής την Μάγια Αντένα και τον Μιχάλ Μικ, μελέτησαν στοιχεία από 12 ευρωπαϊκές χώρες (μεταξύ των οποίων δεν ήταν η Ελλάδα), τα οποία αφορούσαν την περίοδο 2006 - 2012.
